This website has been designed especially to support the teaching and learning of phonics in schools and homes. It is a website that teachers, parents and children can use and share alike, with the idea being that there are resources available for teachers to use, games for children to play, and information for parents, so everyone can be involved in teaching and learning phonics together. Over the next couple of months it will become jam packed with interactive and printable teaching resources, planning and online games to help children of all ages learn, understand and improve their reading and writing.
Schools and Teachers
The majority of resources available on this site have been designed with schools and teachers in mind. Some of the interactive resources are specifically designed for teachers to enhance their teaching in class and small group situations, some resources are fun online games teachers can play with the class and some resources are games the children can play independently to help them revise their phonics knowledge. Resources also have a variety of themes to capture different children’s interests, and enable teachers to link phonics to their current topic.
Many parents worry about phonics, yet don’t know enough about the subject to help their child with it. This site explains to parents how phonics is taught in schools, what letters are taught when and how they are supposed to sound, and how by learning the sounds children can then begin to blend and segment words to help them read and write. This website also has fun online games for children to play at home to help them revise and improve their phonics, which can be accessed with or without help from a parent.
As well as great online resources and games this site has a blog about phonics and other important areas linked to Literacy. The emphasis of this blog is to share the good practice of Phonics and Literacy in Early Years and Key Stage One and debate relevant and current issues within education. Although the blog is mainly aimed at teachers, it may be a very interesting read for parents and many of the activities suggested for the classroom could be easily adapted to be used at home.
I am a Primary Teacher and am now in my 8th year of teaching. Although I started off teaching in Year 5 and 6 I quickly made my way down the years and found my real passion, which is teaching Early Years! After completing my PGCE I taught in London for 5 years before moving to Thailand to work for an International School. Since working in Thailand I have spent much of my time focusing on the teaching of Phonics to children with English as an Additional Language. From that came the idea for the creation of this website; a website based on catering for the needs of teachers, parents and children, that schools can use in conjunction with families at home.
